THE YWCA OF WESTERN MASSACHUSETTS IS DEDICATED TO ELIMINATING RACISM, EMPOWERING WOMEN AND PROMOTING PEACE, JUSTICE, FREEDOM AND DIGNITY FOR ALL.
“Countless times, repeatedly, I have asked myself, ‘How did I get here? What did I do to our lives? Why did I allow this?’ I was with my abuser for fourteen years. I left many times, whether on my own, or with police involvement, with just the clothes on my back, and my son in tow. I lost so much… It does not start the way it ends. I did not go into the relationship being abused or treated badly. When I finally realized how bad things were, I was pregnant with my child with no family, no friends, and engrossed in providing the lifestyle that kept some “peace” in the home. I was alone. The isolation, shame, and fear became a way of life. The abuse I endured, verbal, emotional, financial, and sexual was so horrific. Even if I could think of someone or somewhere to go, I was too ashamed and afraid that I would not be believed or that I would be blamed. I have heard others say, “She should have known better, she must like being hit, it is her fault that she stayed.” Luckily, I had escaped again, and was accepted by the YWCA of Western MA. The YWCA offered us a safe place and a home, which we have not had in years. We are with people and staff who understands us, and do not judge how many times we returned, how long we stayed, or that we allowed this to happen again. We have access to the counseling we need to recover, heal, and move forward. We survived. We have been empowered. Now my questions to myself are, ‘Who will I become? What can I rebuild? Why did I not do this sooner?’” – Ann, A Survivor You can help survivors like Ann by giving today.
